This course is very easy to operate. Click here and you are are already in the 1 st lesson.

  1. The right arrow allows you go move one page ahead, and the left arrow moves you one page back.
  2. In the left part of the window are choices of lesson plans. Click on the desired chapter in order to view its contents. The subsections of lesson will appear. A click on the link "Grips" takes you directly to desired exercise.

  6. When your typing is good, the stickman looks satisfied.
  7. Here, you can view statistics of your errors.

Notes for Macintosh users

Tests have shown that on a Mac, under some circumstances, the Netscape Communicator 4.5 may not be able to play some sounds. If this is the case, you should work with 4.0 version that comes with this program.

Under specific circumstances, the Java-Applet will process your inputs rather slowly on Apple computers. We are aware of this problem and are exploring possible solutions. In general, should this happen, simply close your browser and restart the course it. You may work with Microsoft Internet Explorer and make sure that the Apple Java Virtual Machine (MRJ) is installed as well. To do so, choose the Command options in the Edit menu. Now, click on Java. If you have Java VM: adjust Apple MRJ (see next paragraph).

The Microsoft Internet Explorer executes Java applets with the aid of MRJ (Apples Java Virtual Machine) (see section above). If you use this course with the Microsoft Internet Explorer, you require MRJ 2.1. MRJ is a component of Mac OS, and unfortunately still has some bugs in its version 2.0. For instance, the entered text may be displayed twice. You can solve this problem by downloading and installing the latest version of the Java Virtual Machine from the Apple homepage (www.apple.com). You can also install MRJ 2.1.2 which can be found on the CD im SSK folder.

Unfortunately, there are still storage problems with Java and JavaScript on Apple computers. This is relevant to this course since it has been completely programmed in Java and JavaScript. Nevertheless, this has numerous advantages compared to traditional programming languages. The most important advantage is that it is generally compatible. It works on PC, Linux, Apple and other systems. During periods of prolonged usage, you may receive a system message alerting you to storage problems. Or you might receive a message that your browser does not support Java. Simply close the browser and restart.

When the applet is loaded for the first time, it is sometimes not displayed correctly. Several elements may be missing. This malfunction occurs primarily with Mac computers. Click on the side title to fix this problem.

If you modify the size of the browser window, a JavaScript error message may appear. Click on the command button "Updating" in order to solve this problem. Choosing specific tool bars will also achieve the same effect.

Under some circumstances, the yellow insertion mark may not be displayed above the alphabetic character to be typed. In this case, make sure that the Microsoft Internet Explorer is set in such a way that the Apple Java Virtual Machine (MRJ) is being used. In order to carry out this setting, you choose the command Options in the Edit menu. Now, click on Java. When working with Java VM: set Apple MRJ.

Common problems and solutions

Problem: I am unable to type; not everything is displayed
Solution: To solve this problem, you need a Java compatible browser that also supports JavaSkript (Internet Explorer and Netscape from version 4.0). Make sure that the execution of Java applets is not suppressed. You will find the Netscape Navigator on the CD-ROM in the "Browser" folder as well as the Internet Explorer (only Windows).
If you work with Windows, it is sometimes necessary to install a current version of the Java Virtual Machine. For further information go to: http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm32.htm.
Problem: ö, ä and ü are not displayed.
Solution: You might be using an "old" browser version. Install a current version of the Microsoft Internet Explorer (http//:www.microsoft.de) or of the Netscape Navigator (http://www.netscape.com). From version 4.0 onwards, these problems do not occur. You will find the Netscape Navigator on the CD-ROM in the "Browser" folder and the Internet Explorer as well.
